At a speech this morning in Iran’s religious city of Qom, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that one of the blessings of the latest nuclear negotiations between Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany was that from the latest statements of US officials in the last few weeks, US enmity toward Iran became clear for everyone to see.

“The latest negotiations,” Ayatollah Khamenei said, “showed America’s enmity and also their inability.”

“If they do not take action on a situation, it is because of their inability to do so and not the lack of enmity,” he continued in regard to US options in confronting Iran’s nuclear program. “They said that ‘if we could separate the fabric of Iran’s nuclear industry we would, but we can’t.’ Yes, they cannot because of the will of the Iranian nation. They stood on their own feet and brought their innovation and ability to the field.”

Ayatollah Khamenei added, “No one should be under the illusion that the enemies of the Islamic revolution have today given up their enmity.” He continued, “Of course, it’s possible any enemy might have no choice but to step back, but the enemy and the enemy’s front-line must not be ignored.” He stressed, “The enemy’s smile should not be taken seriously” and Iranians should not be “deceived by it.”

However, he did add that Iran would continue to negotiate with the US on specific concerns. “We have announced this before, the Islamic Republic, on specific issues that are of interest, will negotiate with this Satan, to deter its evil and solve problems,” he said.

He also stressed that there should be a focus on Iran’s domestic manpower to address problems, saying, “My recommendation to the officials has always been that, to eliminate problems there has to be a focus on a domestic force and they must not look to outside.”

Iran’s supreme leader also addressed statements by US officials and US media on Iran’s human rights situation, though he did not mention anyone by name or any comments specifically.

“Anyone who talks about human rights, the Americans have no right to talk, because the US government is the biggest violator of human rights in the world,” Khamenei said.

According to the Fars News transcript that quoted the supreme leader’s website, Ayatollah Khamenei’s statement about human rights was in regard to US support of Israel, particularly with respect to Gaza and the control Israel has over entry of medical and food supplies into Gaza. “Is this issue not oppression and violation of human rights?” he asked. “Under these situations, are they not embarrassed to speak about human rights?”

According to the transcript, Ayatollah Khamenei also mentioned that US President Barack Obama had not kept his promise to close Guantanamo detention camp.

He also criticized the use of drones in Pakistan and Afghanistan. “The use of drones against the people of Afghanistan and Pakistan and their crimes through unknown methods in the world is an indication of the real and anti-human rights nature of the Americans.”

He continued, “We are a plaintiff against America and many Western countries on human rights, and we take them before the court of world public opinion and they don’t have an answer.”

He also praised Qom and the role it has played since the 1979 revolution.
